Central Bank of Malta Governor participates in ECOFIN meeting in Cyprus

The Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, Alexander Demarco, participated in the informal Economic and Financial Affairs (ECOFIN) meeting held in Lefkosia, Cyprus, on 22–23 May 2026.

The meeting brought together EU Central Bank Governors and Finance Ministers to discuss the usage of stablecoins and the challenges that they may pose.

During the discussions, participants exchanged views on the risks related to stablecoins, and possible policy initiatives to address such risks, as well as how these instruments could interact with the broader financial system.
