FIAU appoints two new deputy directors

The Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit (FIAU) has appointed two new deputy directors following a call for applications to strengthen its senior leadership.

Ruth Aisthorpe Gauci and Elena Tabone have both been part of the FIAU for the past 11 years and will now assume new, additional responsibilities in their new roles.

Aisthorpe Gauci will serve as deputy director for Intelligence & Cash Restriction, having previously headed the FIAU’s intelligence function, including intelligence analysis and strategy. Her professional experience includes close and sustained cooperation with both domestic and international authorities.

Tabone will serve as deputy director for Strategy, Legal and Administrative Enforcement. She has headed the FIAU’s administrative enforcement function for most of her time at the FIAU, having played a major role in strengthening the FIAU’s strategic direction, enforcement processes and supporting the development of a robust and transparent approach.

In their new roles they will work closely with the FIAU’s Board of Governors, Director and senior management.

“These appointments reflect the FIAU’s continued growth and its expanding responsibilities as Malta’s supervisor and leading authority in the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism. As the scope, complexity and scale of AML/CFT oversight continue to evolve, reinforcing leadership capacity remains a key institutional priority,” the FIAU said in a statement announcing the appointments.

“Both appointees have played a central role in the development and consolidation of the FIAU’s Intelligence, Supervision and Enforcement functions and continue to contribute significantly to the Unit’s strategic direction. Together, they bring extensive collective experience within the FIAU and the wider AML/CFT landscape, supported by deep technical knowledge developed through years of hands‑on work and sustained engagement at both domestic and international levels.”
