Express Trailers introduces new work hours to strengthen employee wellbeing

Express Trailers has announced a shift of its office hours, a move designed to support a healthier work–life balance for its employees.

The new decision, which will see employees working between 08.00 and 16.30hrs, reflects the company’s broader commitment to employee wellbeing, a principle that has helped drive remarkable results in a sector traditionally plagued by high staff turnover.

Romina Vella, Head of Human Resources explains how in 2025, the company managed to achieve a staff retention rate of 89.9%, a figure which she describes as well above the industry norm.

“This success is the outcome of structured HR initiatives, clear processes, and a leadership philosophy grounded in empathy, consistency, and fairness,” said Vella, who has overseen the company’s HR function for the past three years.

Ms Vella also noted how diversity across the company’s workforce, which across its Malta operations, its logistics hub in Genoa and a Europe-wide driver network represents 14 nationalities, was never treated as a statistic but as a reflection of Express Trailers’ values of inclusion and collaboration.

“Collectively, our employees’ unique perspectives is what drives operational excellence and innovation throughout the company,” she added.

However, Express Trailers’ approach to wellbeing goes beyond office hours. The company last year started hosting wellbeing programmes in partnership with Sedqa, addressing topics such as stress management, substance awareness, and mental health to ensure employees remain supported amid the demands of a fast-moving industry.

CEO Etienne Attard emphasises that Express Trailers’ investment in people strategy is far from a “soft” initiative.

“Our employees are our greatest asset and they have helped us understand how a strong internal voice and a culture that prioritises wellbeing can become decisive competitive advantages,” concluded Attard.
