Malta International Airport says its water fountains are estimated to have cut the number of single-use plastic bottles by more than 741,000, while announcing a slew of other green milestones.
In a statement on Friday, MIA said that between 2019 and last year, its landfill waste had reduced by 20 per cent despite passenger numbers increasing by 23 per cent over the same time.
It said the introduction of organic waste collection in 2021 “yielded immediate results, reducing landfill waste by nine per cent compared to the previous year and boosting the share of recycling significantly”.
MIA noted that its Malta Airport Foundation had removed around 14 tonnes of marine waste from the seabed in cleanups since 2020.
Airport staff recently attended an educational session in collaboration with WasteServ as part of the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR).
MIA administration and housekeeping specialist Rosemarie Barbara said: “When waste is generated by more than 5,000 employees and stakeholders together with over nine million passengers, its proper management becomes both a more complex endeavour and a real opportunity to make a big impact”.
The airport noted that environmental criteria, including covering waste management, were introduced in its tenders last year.
