The Association of Surgeons of Malta, in collaboration with the UK’s Military Surgical Society, will host its Spring Meeting on April 18 at the Central Auditorium, University of Malta, located at Mater Dei Hospital.
The event will bring together leading clinicians, academics and trainees to discuss cutting-edge developments in surgery, military medicine and interdisciplinary care. The diverse programme includes keynote lectures, talks and trainee presentations, highlighting both clinical excellence and ongoing research.
The event will open with a welcome address by Gordon Caruana Dingli, president of the Association of Surgeons of Malta, followed by a lecture by Jo Etienne Abela, Minister of Health and Active Ageing, titled ‘On the Afflictions of the Notable Captains of History’.
Keynote sessions will include: ‘Trauma Care on the Future Battlefield’ delivered by Col. Paul Parker of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and ‘Cholera in Malta’ presented by cardiothoracic surgeon and academic Joseph Galea.
Additional sessions will explore psychological trauma in conflict zones, medico-legal considerations in warfare, and clinical topics such as delirium in surgical patients.
The afternoon programme will present trainee presentations, including of award-winning projects and research from the Military Medical Student Committee (MMSC). Topics will range from colorectal cancer screening trends and cardiac surgery documentation practices to innovations in ENT emergency management and thromboembolism prevention in trauma surgery.
The meeting will conclude with oral presentations from researchers and closing remarks.
