Remenda Grech is a Labour Party candidate
For more than twenty years, my life has been dedicated to people, especially children, families, and individuals who often feel unheard.
As a social worker, I had the privilege of entering people’s homes, but more importantly, entering their realities. I listened to parents carrying enormous burdens, children trying to make sense of difficult situations, youths searching for guidance, and families simply hoping for support and understanding.
These experiences shaped not only my profession, but the person I am today.
Throughout my career, I worked tirelessly to protect children and advocate for their wellbeing. I was directly involved in the introduction of legislation aimed at strengthening the protection of children in Malta because
I firmly believe that every child deserves safety, dignity, stability, and the opportunity to thrive.
For years, I also served as a legal guardian for children in care, ensuring that their holistic needs were safeguarded, not only their legal protection, but also their emotional wellbeing, education, healthcare, and future opportunities.
Those experiences taught me resilience, responsibility, and the importance of never giving up on people.
Listening has always been at the heart of my work. Listening with empathy. Listening without judgement. Giving people the space to speak and ensuring that their voices matter. Many individuals do not need someone to speak for them; they need someone willing to truly hear them.
This belief also led me to pursue further studies, including a Master’s degree in mediation. I chose to focus my research on co-parenting as I strongly believe that access to both parents is a right of the child and that, even during difficult family situations, children must remain at the centre of every decision.
Mediation taught me that dialogue, respect, and understanding can build healthier families and stronger communities.
Alongside my professional journey, I am also a law student because I believe law is one of the strongest tools we have to create fairness, justice, and protection for people. Social work allowed me to understand human realities, while law helps create the structures that can improve lives.
I also had the honour of representing Malta on various international committees and discussions relating to children’s rights and social policy. I served as an observer during the establishment of ethical guidelines concerning surrogacy for different countries, an experience that reinforced my belief that policies must always remain centred on human dignity and the wellbeing of children.
Beyond my professional work, community has always been central to my life. I have long been involved in local festas and community activities because I believe strong communities are built through participation, solidarity, and people coming together.
These moments remind us that communities flourish when people know they can depend on one another.
My voluntary work with Home-Start, supporting families with children under the age of five, further strengthened my belief that early support can transform lives. Sometimes families simply need encouragement, guidance, or someone who believes in them during difficult moments.
So why politics?
Because after years advocating for children, families, youths, and vulnerable individuals, I realised that lasting change also requires being part of the decisions that shape people’s everyday lives. For me, politics should never be distant from people.
Politics is about remaining close to families and communities, listening to their realities, and working tirelessly to improve their quality of life. It is about giving people a voice and ensuring nobody feels forgotten.
I chose to form part of Partit Laburista because I genuinely believe in the progress achieved in the social sector under Labour governments. We have seen unprecedented investment in social services, stronger support systems for families, and the largest social budget in Malta’s history announced last year.
These are not simply statistics, they represent real opportunities and real support for people who need it most.
I also strongly believe in our youths. Young people deserve opportunities, guidance, and second chances. They deserve to be heard, involved, and trusted. Too often, society focuses on labelling youths instead of empowering them.
I want to help create spaces where young people feel valued, where their ideas matter, and where they actively participate in shaping the future of our country.
My journey has always been about service, protecting children, supporting families, strengthening communities, and giving people a voice. That is the same commitment I bring into politics, a commitment rooted in compassion, integrity, hard work, and genuine belief in people.
Because politics should never lose sight of what truly matters, people, families, communities, and the dignity of every person.
