Digital euro to take centre stage at Ganado Advocates’ 11th Annual Banking and Payments Law Seminar

Ganado Advocates will be hosting its forthcoming 11th edition of the Annual Banking and Payments Law Seminar on February 23.

The afternoon seminar, in collaboration with the Malta Bankers’ Association, will be held at the Malta Marriott Hotel in St Julians, once again bringing together senior figures from the banking, payments, legal and regulatory communities at a time of significant international regulatory change.

This year’s seminar comes against the backdrop of accelerated European Union initiatives in digital finance, most notably the recent progress at EU level on the legal framework underpinning the digital euro.

With EU institutions advancing negotiations on its governance, safeguards and role alongside cash, financial institutions and payment service providers are increasingly required to prepare for a payments ecosystem that is set to undergo fundamental transformation.

Commenting ahead of the event, Conrad Portanier, Partner at Ganado Advocates, said that the timing of this year’s seminar was particularly significant for the sector.

“Between China’s expansion of influence, the dominance of the US dollar and the agility of private stablecoins, the European Union must move from principles to action.  This seminar should provide a practical and legal lens through which stakeholders can better understand how emerging frameworks, from digital currency to strengthened AML obligations, will reshape banking and payments law in the years ahead.”

The seminar programme will feature contributions from leading local and international experts and will examine key developments affecting the sector, including EU banking regulation, payments innovation, compliance priorities and supervisory expectations.

A keynote address by the European legal expert Professor Christos Gortsos (University of Luxembourg and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) will explore the  major legal challenges arising from the establishment of the digital euro, while other sessions will explore the evolving anti-money laundering framework and its implications from a board and governance level.

As customary, the event will include two separate interactive breakout sessions. One session will deal with the latest developments in consumer credit regulation, whereas a second parallel session, organised in collaboration with the Financial Institutions Malta Association (FIMA), will focus on next-generation payments and regulatory developments affecting payment institutions.

“After eleven years, we are proud at  how our Banking and Payments Law Seminar has established itself as a key forum for informed discussion on regulatory change within Malta’s financial services ecosystem, especially at such a critical juncture for the European and local banking and payments landscape,” added Dr Portanier.
