The Malta Employers Association has marked its 60th anniversary with a special event held on November 27, to celebrate a legacy of unwavering commitment and its most salient achievements in supporting Malta’s business community.
Founded in 1965, Malta Employers grew steadily in both relevance and stature, representing the interests of responsible employers for six decades.
From the outset, the Association’s mission has been to understand employers’ concerns, provide invaluable professional advice, and promote industrial harmony – an achievement that has greatly benefited Malta’s economic landscape and attracted investment.
Among the Association’s most significant milestones was the pioneering collaboration with the General Workers Union in 1966 to produce a model collective agreement. This agreement, which continues to serve as a benchmark for industrial relations in Malta, set the standard for mutual respect and constructive dialogue between employers and employees.
Over the years, Malta Employers played a pivotal role in shaping national economic and social policies, driven by ongoing research and feedback from its membership.
The Association also contributed to crucial negotiations and mediations at key moments in Malta’s history, such as the Incomes Policy in 1989, further cementing its reputation as a trusted partner in the nation’s progress.
As the Association celebrates this historic milestone, President Ivan Refalo remarked on the ongoing transformation in terms of rebranding and digitalisation which took place silently within the organisation in the past months to ensure relevance and efficiency going forward into the present and the future.

Refalo called upon all stakeholders – employers, employees, and policymakers – to continue working together.
“Our achievements are a testament to the power of collaboration. Let us build on this legacy, facing the future as partners, united in our dedication to Malta’s prosperity,” he said.
