Central Bank of Malta Governor at IMF-World Bank constituency meeting in Portugal

Central Bank of Malta Governor, Alexander Demarco and Deputy Governor for Monetary Policy, Rita Schembri, together with International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group (WBG) Governors and senior officials from Albania, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, and San Marino, gathered in Lisbon, Portugal on 6 and 7 July, 2026 for the IMF-WBG constituency meeting.

The meeting was hosted by the Ministry of Finance of Portugal and Banco de Portugal.

The opening remarks were delivered by the Minister of Finance of Portugal, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, and by the Governor of Banco de Portugal, Álvaro Santos Pereira.

Present for the meeting were also Finance Minister Clyde Caruana, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for the Finance Ministry, Paul Zahra, as well as Executive Directors Riccardo Ercoli and Matteo Bugamelli, who represent the constituency at the IMF and WBG respectively.

The topics discussed included recent developments and future challenges for the IMF and WBG, AI adoption at multilateral institutions and central banks: projects and main challenges and AI challenges in employment.
