European allergy alliance celebrates 35th anniversary at Malta AGM

The European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients’ Associations (EFA) marked a historic 35th anniversary during its AGM held recently at the Radisson Blu Resort, St Julian’s.

Hosted by the Malta Eczema Society, the event served as both a celebration of three-and-a-half decades of patient advocacy and a forward-looking summit on the future of eczema and respiratory care in Europe.

Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela joined delegates from across the continent to recognise EFA’s journey from its founding in 1991 to becoming a leading voice for over 200 million patients today.

35 years of putting patients first

The EFA has grown into a powerful alliance of over 40 national organisations. The anniversary celebrations in Malta highlighted the federation’s pivotal role in shaping EU health policy and its tireless work in making “invisible” illnesses – such as atopic eczema and COPD – a global health priority.

A multidisciplinary path forward true to its legacy of innovation

The AGM moved beyond traditional dermatology to include experts in allergy and respiratory diseases. By addressing the “atopic march” – the progression from eczema in childhood to asthma and allergies later in life – the summit promoted a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to healthcare that mirrors EFA’s comprehensive mission.

The human side of the burden

The anniversary was further commemorated through a powerful photo exhibition. Featuring portraits and personal testimonies of those living with eczema, the display brought the “invisible burden” of chronic disease to life.

It served as a reminder that while medical technology has advanced significantly over the last 35 years, the need for empathy and patient-centred support remains as vital as ever.

“Celebrating 35 years in Malta is a testament to the strength of our community”

“Celebrating 35 years in Malta is a testament to the strength of our community,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Eczema Society.

“We aren’t just looking back at our history; we are using the momentum of this anniversary to ensure that the next 35 years bring even greater breakthroughs for patients in Malta and across Europe.”

Founded in 1991, the European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients’ Associations (EFA) is a network of over 40 organisations from 25 countries, representing patients living with allergies, asthma and COPD.

The Malta Eczema Society provides support, education and advocacy for individuals and families affected by eczema in the Maltese islands.
