Malta’s tourism and hospitality industry has long been a pillar of our national economy. Yet in today’s rapidly evolving global landscape, success can no longer be measured by numbers alone.
The real differentiator for our country lies in quality, in the standards we uphold, the expertise we cultivate and the value we add to every learner and to the industry at large.
At the Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS), we firmly believe that maintaining the status quo is not enough. In a competitive international environment, standing still means falling behind.

Our responsibility as Malta’s leading institution in tourism and hospitality education is, therefore, to continuously raise standards, strengthen academic rigour and ensure that our graduates are not only employable, but exceptional.
Quality education is not defined by volume, but by impact. It is reflected in the competence of graduates entering the workforce, in their professionalism, adaptability and leadership potential.
It is reflected in the confidence employers place in them. And, ultimately, it is reflected in the reputation of Malta as a destination that delivers excellence, not only in service, but in expertise.
This commitment to excellence was recently reinforced through ITS’s accreditation by the Tourism & Hospitality Education ‒ International Centre of Excellence (THE-ICE).
This acclaimed recognition is not merely a certification; it is an international endorsement of our academic standards, governance, industry engagement and continuous improvement processes. It affirms that Malta is capable of meeting, and exceeding, global benchmarks in specialised tourism and hospitality education.
However, accreditation is not an end point. It is a responsibility. It challenges us to further embed quality assurance into every aspect of what we do, from curriculum design and hands-on training, to research, industry partnerships and student support. It reinforces our vision to move beyond transactional education and focus instead on transformational learning.
Tourism is no longer a simple service industry. It is increasingly shaped by sustainability imperatives, digital transformation, evolving consumer expectations and global mobility.
Preparing students for this environment requires more than technical skills. It requires critical thinking, cultural intelligence, ethical awareness and resilience.
These qualities must be intentionally cultivated through a learning environment that values innovation, experiential learning and international exposure.
Our vision for ITS is, therefore, grounded in three core principles: excellence, relevance and value creation.
Excellence means delivering programmes that are academically robust and practically immersive.
It means investing in modern facilities, continuous professional development for lecturers and structured industry engagement. It means benchmarking ourselves internationally rather than regionally.
Relevance means ensuring that what we teach reflects real industry needs. Strong partnerships with local and international stakeholders enable us to align training with evolving standards and emerging trends. Education must remain dynamic, not static.
Value creation means recognising that education is an investment in national capacity. Every graduate who enters the workforce equipped with high standards and professional integrity contributes to Malta’s competitiveness.
By strengthening human capital, we strengthen the country’s economic resilience and long-term sustainability.
As we look ahead, our ambition is clear: to position Malta not only as a leading tourism destination, but as a centre of excellence in tourism and hospitality education. This requires vision, collaboration and an unwavering commitment to quality over quantity.
The future of our sector depends on the standards we set today. At ITS, we remain committed to raising those standards, continuously, deliberately and responsibly, for the benefit of our students, our industry and our country.
