Gozo and Comino contribute 4.3% of national GDP at market prices in 2024

In 2024, the GVA at basic prices in the regions of Malta, and Gozo and Comino was estimated at €20,479.9 and €919.9 million respectively; reflecting corresponding increases of 10.4 and 8.7 per cent over 2023, according to data issued by the National Statistics Office.

Malta region

In 2024, all industries registered increases in GVA when compared to the previous year.

The industries of Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; transportation and storage; accommodation and food service activities (G, H and I) accounted for the largest share in GVA at 18.2 per cent.

These industries registered a growth in GVA of 11.7 per cent when compared to 2023.

The industries comprising Professional, scientific and technical activities; administrative and support service activities (M and N) contributed to the second largest share of the GVA with 17.4 per cent.

Gozo region

In 2024, all industries registered increases in GVA when compared to the previous year.

The industries of Public administration and defence, Compulsory social security, Education, Human health and social work activities (O, P and Q) accounted for the highest share of the GVA at 20.7 per cent and have registered an increase of 14.0 per cent over 2023.

The industries comprising Wholesale and retail trade, Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, Transportation and storage, Accommodation and food service activities (G, H and I) accounted for the second highest share of the GVA at 18.4 per cent and have registered a growth of 11.5 per cent over 2023. 

Regional Gross Domestic Product

In 2024, GDP at market prices in the regions of Malta, and Gozo and Comino was estimated at €22,104.4 million and €992.9 million respectively, corresponding to 95.6 and 4.3 per cent of national GDP at market prices.

GDP per capita at market prices increased in both regions. The per capita GDP at market prices for the Malta region as a percentage of the national was 103.0 per cent while that of the Gozo and Comino region stood at 59.8 per cent.

The per capita regional GDP does not reflect the income available to the private households of each respective region, but it strictly relates to the economic activity prevailing in each of the regions.

Employment

In 2024, all industries in the Malta region registered increases in employment when compared to the previous year.

The largest percentage increases resulted in the economic activities relating to Real estate activities (L); and Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; transportation and storage; accommodation and food service activities (G, H and I), registering growths of 10.0 and 5.2 per cent respectively.

Almost all industries in the Gozo and Comino region registered increases in employment during 2024, with the exception of economic activities relating to Professional, scientific and technical activities; administrative and support service activities (M and N).

The largest increase was registered in the economic activity related to Financial and insurance activities (K) with a growth rate of 18.5 per cent.
