IFSP officially launches its Directors Chapter

The Institute of Financial Services Practitioners (IFSP) has officially launched IDC the IFSP Directors Chapter within its structures.

IDC has been set up to act as the recognised voice of directors in Malta, and to act as Malta’s voice in Europe’s director community. This is a first for Malta that keeps improving  governance practices and capability for the independent director’s community.

The primary aims of the IDC are to raise the bar and promote good governance, to provide education and training to current directors as well as those considering directorship roles, to promote and support best practice in board leadership, and to represent the interests of directors in discussions with stakeholders, regulators, and policy makers.

IDC is a full member of ecoDa, making it the exclusive representative body in Malta for the European Confederation of Directors’ Associations, an umbrella institution representing Europe’s leading director institutes and associations, representing over 50,000 directors from 21 countries.

Through IDC’s membership, Maltese directors will benefit from thought leadership  and best governance practice across the EU member bodies.

“The IFSP understood there is a need in Malta to focus on good governance ethical decision making and corporate governance, and specific training for directors”, said Nick Captur, President of the IFSP. We held discussions with MFSA on the subject and I am very pleased to say that they were very supportive of the initiative, and encouraged us to pursue membership with ECODA.

Furthermore, the IFSP has recently signed an MoU with the Malta Chamber of Commerce and discussions are currently underhand so that IDC will participate in the Chamber’s committee on governance. The launch of IDC is a big step forward for IFSP as we further consolidate our representation of practitioners in Malta.”

“IFSP has over the past years spoken for licensed directors in Malta. IDC will enable us to broaden our reach and be the voice for a wider body of directors in Malta, and, through our membership in ecoDa, be Malta’s voice in Europe’s director community, advocating for high governance standards and for directors’ competence and effectiveness, which are critical in ethical and sound decision making,”, said IDC Chair Dr Etienne Borg Cardona.

IDC is open to current and prospective directors sitting on boards in all business sectors.

“We plan to launch a series of practical training workshops in Q1 2026 which will encompass not only theory, but focus on best practice exercises and case study boardroom scenarios” continued Dr Borg Cardona. “I am pleased with our progress in integrating ourselves within the ecoDa governance structures and we have recently attended ecoDa’s board of governors meeting and the Education Group meeting wherein we briefed our European counterparts on our plans for the coming year.

“I cannot but thank here my collegues on the IDC Council, Chris Curmi, Aleksandra Dimitrova, Alexia Farrugia, Dr Manfred Galdes, Chris Naudi, and Marisa Xuereb for their commitment, support and dedication to IDC’s success.”
