The Gasan Foundation reignites heritage at Majjistral Park

The Foundation’s support drives restoration of The Villa and continues with furnishing and final works.

The Gasan Foundation continues to play a vital role in bringing The Villa at Majjistral Nature and History Park back to life.

From funding the restoration to supporting the furnishing and finishing touches, the Foundation’s ongoing involvement has been key in transforming this historic British-era building into a revitalised space ready for its next chapter.

Recently, The Majjistral Park hosted an event to celebrate the completion of The Villa’s restoration, and to thank the many sponsors and partners whose contributions are helping transform the park into a thriving example of conservation in action.

The Gasan Foundation also confirmed that it will continue its support by funding the villa’s furnishing and interior.

Originally part of the Għajn Tuffieħa Barracks, the villa stood abandoned for decades before the Heritage Parks Federation, made up of Din l-Art Ħelwa and Nature Trust Malta, , took over stewardship of the site.

In 2022, The Gasan Foundation provided the crucial backing that allowed restoration works on The Villa, to begin in earnest. Since then, extensive structural and aesthetic works have been carried out, including the reconstruction of roofs, restoration of the limestone façade, and careful rebuilding of the colonnades that define the villa’s character.

Once fully complete, The Villa will serve as a three-bedroom guesthouse, a first-of-its-kind experience offering visitors the rare opportunity to stay within a protected natural park.

Beyond accommodation, the project forms part of a sustainable model that supports ongoing conservation and education initiatives throughout Majjistral Park.

“The Gasan Foundation is proud to support projects that protect Malta’s heritage while giving it new purpose,” said Sarah Carbonaro, representing the Foundation. “Seeing The Villa brought back to life is deeply rewarding,  and we are delighted to help take it one step further, turning this beautiful space into a place people can truly experience and enjoy.”

Stretching across six kilometres of coastline from Anchor Bay to Golden Bay, Majjistral Park is Malta’s first national park and a Natura 2000 site rich in biodiversity and cultural history. Over the years, it has become a symbol of how environmental protection, heritage restoration, and community engagement can coexist through collaboration.

“This project is a testament to what can be achieved when purpose meets partnership,” said Martin Galea, President of the Heritage Parks Federation. “The Gasan Foundation’s continued support has been instrumental in transforming The Villa from a neglected structure into a living part of the park’s story.”

The villa’s completion marks another milestone in the park’s wider development plan, which includes the creation of educational spaces, ranger training facilities, a children’s camp, and inclusive amenities such as a multi-sensory room for individuals with diverse needs.

The completion of the villa marks a key milestone in the Majjistral’s ongoing development plan, which includes the creation of educational facilities, dormitories for schools and scout groups, and inclusive spaces.

Among these is a multipurpose room thoughtfully designed to accommodate visitors with diverse physical, cognitive, and neurodevelopmental needs, ensuring accessibility and meaningful participation for all.
