Central Bank of Malta Governor Prof. Edward Scicluna recently addressed a high-level conference held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Bank of Albania.
He joined a number of central bankers, senior policymakers and distinguished academics from across Europe and beyond to discuss the various challenges the global economy is confronted by today.
The theme of the conference was “A century of central banking: From institutional foundation to regional anchor”. It discussed geo-economics fragmentation and trade reconfiguration in relation to the challenges the global economy faces today.
Other important topics included the complex environment Europe must navigate while remaining a cornerstone of political, social and economic convergence. In addition, participants exchanged views on the implications of central bank digital currencies, stablecoins and new payment infrastructures for monetary sovereignty, financial stability and inclusion.
Finally, monetary policy challenges such as sustaining credibility, anchor expectations and ultimately, achieving price stability in a volatile world, were reflected upon.
Prof. Scicluna joined a panel discussion entitled “The Evolving Challenges of Monetary Policy”. The session explored the shifting landscape of global monetary policy, including the implications of persistent inflationary pressures, geopolitical tensions, technological change in financial services, and the growing importance of communication and transparency in central bank operations.
Opening speeches were made by Edi Rama, Prime Minister of the Republic of Albania, Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank and Gent Sejko, Governor of the Bank of Albania.
